Tod Maffin, Author and Speaker sharing his Facebook wisdom.

Tonight I had the opportunity to attend Third Tuesday’s latest Meetup with Tod Maffin as the guest speaker. In Advanced Facebook Advertising Clinic he shared with us dozens of relevant ideas on improving Facebook Advertising Campaigns. There’s way too much content to put into one blog post but I thought that I would share with you in bullet form 16 Awesome Facebook Advertising Hacks that Tod shared with us. Here they are:

  1. News feed ads click-through rates are astronomically more than sidebar ads
  2. Email support actually works (for paying advertisers in Facebook) if you’re stuck email Facebook support
  3. Ads can direct people to specific tabs of your Facebook page (you have to pay for this)
  4. There’s an ad category called “owners of old computers” – great for targeting tech laggards
  5. Split test everything and see what one performs better – this is vital for improvement
  6. When you optimize for click or page likes on your ad Facebook serves ads to people who historically engage in that particular activity (people who click versus people who like lots of pages)
  7. At the end of creating and planning an ad campaign your are prompted to create a duplicate campaign. This is where you can modify your ads for split testing.
  8. The boosting post option is very limited in it’s targeting and cannot track conversions. Promoted posts does the same thing but can be laser targeted and split tested. You access this through the ads manager.
  9. Wait 6 hours before promoting a post. Let its organic interaction run first and let it prove that it’s engaging enough to sponsor.
  10. The perfect Facebook ad is one of a person smiling, facing the camera and consistent with your demographic.
  11. AdEspresso is an awesome tool to split test and manage Facebook campaigns
  12. Use tabs and embed landing pages using iframes to reduce your ad costs (Facebook off-site clicks are more expensive)
  13. Facebook provides a “Conversion Tracking Code” that helps you calculate ROI
  14. Use the custom audience option to laser target people who you are already connected to (past clients, people you meet at networking sessions etc.) You upload these as email lists.
  15. Use retargeting once you drive that Facebook audience to your site (follow them around the internet http://todmaffin.com/perfectaudience )
  16. Qwaya is a great tool for “Day Parting” (Turning Facebook ads on and off) based upon times of day and other specific criteria.
  17. “Caesar Salad never converts” – Tod Maffin referring to restaurants wanting pictures of food in their ads and ignoring the wisdom of point 10 above :)
